Turlock, The Ruby E. Bergman Women's Center of Emanuel Medical Center has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in digital mammography as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

 The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Virginia, awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice.  Evaluations are conducted by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field.  They assess the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment.  The surveyors report their findings to the ACR's Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report.

Walter Maynard, M.D., Medical Director of the Women's Center, is very pleased to receive this accreditation from the ACR.  He emphasized the need for an annual screening mammogram for women over 40 years of age or earlier if they are in a high risk group.

Ruby E. Bergman Women's Center offers state-of-the art digital mammography with the lowest radiation dose of any facility in the area and also provides free risk assessment as part of the mammogram.

 "An annual screening mammogram may save your life!" is the center's slogan stated Dr. Maynard. It reflects the center's dedication to discovering early localized breast cancers with a 5-year relative survival rate of 98% according to the latest data from the National Cancer Institute.

Dr. Maynard continued, "Additionally, this fall the Ruby E. Bergman Women's Center will also provide the region with the first dedicated high resolution breast MRI scanner, the Aurora 1.5T system.  Our cutting edge breast MRI system is also ideal for claustrophobic patients since the patients head remains outside of the scanner."
