Turlock, The new medical director of the Stanford Emanuel Radiation Oncology Center is a specialist in head, neck and prostate cancers and a published researcher. Radiation oncologist Quoc T. A. Luu, MD, began work at Emanuel Medical Center Oct. 29 after two years as an assistant professor in the Department of Radiation Medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center, near San Bernardino.  

Dr. Luu replaces Dr. Don Goffinet, emeritus professor at Stanford University School of Medicine, who guided the development of the Radiation Oncology Center as interim Medical Director since its opening in March 2007. 

Dr. Luu has high goals for the new center.

"In the short-term, I want to see the facility on track to be the radiation oncology center that central California cancer patients and their families want to come to," Dr. Luu says. "Over the long-term, I plan to do some radiation research." 

Dr. Luu has conducted and published research studies on the treatment of brain tumors and will spearhead clinical trials at the Stanford Emanuel Radiation Oncology Center.

"These clinical trials will provide cancer patients with the opportunity to participate in the most current treatments and therapies," Dr. Luu says.

Dr. Luu earned his medical degree in 1999 at Oregon Health Sciences University in his hometown of Portland. He interned at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Boise, Idaho and began his association with Loma Linda when he was accepted into the radiation oncology residency program there.  

The Stanford Emanuel Radiation Oncology Center is located in Emanuel Medical Plaza at 880 E. Tuolumne Road. Home to the Emanuel Cancer Services, the 45,000 square-foot building also houses the new Ruby E. Bergman Women's Center opening in spring 2008, California Oncology of Turlock (medical oncology practice) and Oasis Surgical (general surgery practice).
