Emanuel Salutes Volunteers During Nationwide Celebration

April 21, 2008

Turlock-Emanuel Medical Center has good reason to salute its 600 volunteers during the 2008 National Volunteer Week being celebrated from April 27th to May 3rd.

Emanuel's volunteers provided more than 63,000 hours of service to the hospital last year without the reward of a paycheck.  In addition, the Emanuel Medical Center Volunteer Auxiliary donated $100,000 to Legacy Circle of Emanuel and $15,000 in scholarships to students pursuing healthcare related studies.

"Our volunteers reflect diversity and a range of backgrounds - long time local residents, community newcomers, retired individuals, and students from the local colleges and schools - aged 14 to 88 years.  These wonderful individuals continue to successfully enhance programs and services provided at Emanuel through their generous contributions of time and talent.  We thank them everyday as their dedication to help others is a model we should all hope to achieve," said Regina Amador, Director of Volunteer Services.

The hospital recently formally honored their volunteers at a special luncheon event with inspirational speakers that included the installation of the 2008-09 Volunteer Auxiliary officers.  Officers include: President, Donna Bartholomew; Vice President, Harriet Martinson; Vice President of Finance, Joan Brown; Vice President of Special Projects, Carol Dodge; Corresponding Secretary, Marge Combs; Recording Secretary, Bonnie Heath; Treasurer, Janet Marshall and Assistant Treasurer, Hedy Woods.

Emanuel Medical Center is fortunate to have experienced and dedicated volunteers who are willing to share their knowledge and expertise with new volunteers.  Every day in every volunteer area, it is observed teaching, guidance, and new friendships developing.  Sharing knowledge and new friendships are vital to the continued growth of the Volunteer Auxiliary as it meets the needs of a growing hospital and growing community.

National Volunteer Week began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as an annual celebration of volunteering.  Since then, every U.S. President has signed a proclamation promoting National Volunteer Week.
