Medicine Runs in the Family - Roya Dehkordi, M.D. - New Turlock OB/GYN
September 08, 2008
Turlock – Medicine must be in the family genes of Roya Dehkordi, MD. An obstetrician and gynecologist (Ob-Gyn), Dr. Dehkordi and her three siblings are all physicians. Not only that – her husband is a veterinarian.
Dr. Dehkordi has joined the Ob-Gyn practice of Daniel McCauley, MD, and Roger Lewis, MD, located at 1729 N. Olive Ave. in Turlock. She is also a new member of the medical staff of Emanuel Medical Center.
Being an Ob-Gyn “is rewarding,” she says. “I chose obstetrics and gynecology because you can help both the mom and her baby. You take care of two people at the same time.”
Dr. Dehkordi earned her medical degree in her native Iran in 1989. While there she pioneered a medical visit program in rural villages, worked in an emergency room and had a private practice as a family physician. She came to the United States seven years ago but still is fluent in Farsi, which will be appreciated by the large population of Persian women in the northern San Joaquin Valley.
To meet the rigorous requirements to become a physician in the United States, Dr. Dehkordi recently graduated from the highly regarded residency program at Indiana University Obstetrics and Gynecology in Indianapolis.
“During the residency program I learned new surgical techniques using robotics and was trained in laparoscopy,” she says. “There’s also a new procedure for vaginal tubal ligation that can be done in the operating room or office. The patient is able to go home the same day.”
While these technologies are not yet available in this area, Dr. Dehkordi hopes to bring some of those advancements here soon.
After four years in the cold of Indiana, Dr. Dehkordi and her family are glad to be in sunny California. Her teenage daughter is excited to be close to top schools like Stanford where she may have a chance to follow in her family’s high-achieving footsteps.
“She likes psychology. Maybe she’ll get a PhD or become a psychiatrist,” Dr. Dehkordi says.
With her family lineage, that would be no surprise.
Dr. Dehkordi is accepting new patients and can be reached at (209) 634-9034.
