October 2006 Health Education Programs at Emanuel Medical Center

Turlock - Emanuel Medical Center will offer in October 2006 a variety of health education classes and programs for residents of Turlock and nearby communities.
All programs are offered in meeting rooms or facilities at the hospital located at 825 Delbon Avenue in Turlock. For more information on any program, call the Education Department at (209) 664-2580 unless otherwise noted.
October 2006 programs, dates, reservations and fees requirements include:
Blood Pressure Checks - FREE – Education Training Room – East Wing. October 10 & 24 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. – No reservation or fee required
Retired nurse members of the Auxiliary of Emanuel offer blood pressure checks.
“CARES” Children’s Grief Art Workshop – First United Methodist Church of Turlock, 1660 Arbor Way, Asbury Hall - Call Hospice of Emanuel to register – (209) 664-2550. October 7 & 21, November 4 & 11 from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. - Pre-Registration and $15.00 fee required. For children ages 6-11 who have lost a loved one. Facilitators: Janelle Mercurio and Gina Lima
Childbirth Preparation Series (7 weeks) – Conference Rooms D & E - East Wing. October 19, 26, November 2, 9, 16, 30, December 7 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. – Pre-Registration and $55.00 series fee required. Prepare for the birth of your child by attending this 7- week series. Topics include physiology of labor, relaxation exercises, paced breathing, breast-feeding, infant care and safety and a tour of the Mary Stuart Rogers Birthing Center. Class is limited to 15 couples.
Childbirth Preparation – Two-Day Weekend Childbirth Preparation – Conference Room C – East Wing. October 14 and 15 – Saturday, October 14th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, October 15th from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pre-Registration and $40.00 fee required. Prepare for the birth of your child by attending this two-day class. This weekend class will focus on the relaxation and coping skills needed for labor and birth, the birth process, infant care, breastfeeding, Cesarean birth and post-partum care. A tour of the Mary Stuart Rogers Birthing Center is included. Class is limited to 15 couples.
Childbirth “Spanish” One-Day Intensive Childbirth Preparation –
Conference Room C – East Wing. October 21 from 12 Noon to 4:00 p.m. – Pre-registration and $25.00 fee required. This class is en Espanol and is designed for the Spanish speaking expectant families. Class is limited to 15 couples.
CPR - Retraining for Healthcare Providers – Conference Room C – East Wing. October 17 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. – Pre-Registration and $20.00 fee required. Requires knowledge of current AHA guidelines. A copy of current CPR card must accompany registration. Class size is limited.
Diabetes Basics – Education Training Room – East Wing. October 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 12 Noon – BY PHYSICIAN REFERRAL ONLY – Pre-registration required. Are you a new diabetic? Learn what and when you should eat and how to monitor your blood sugar. You will also learn what blood sugar numbers mean and other ways to control your blood sugar.
Heartsaver CPR & First Aid – Conference Rooms D & E – East Wing. October 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. – Pre-Registration and $50.00 fee required. This class is approved for daycare providers. Class size is limited.
Hospice Volunteer Training – East Wing - Call Hospice of Emanuel to register – (209) 664-2550. English and Spanish - Friday, October 27 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 28 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pre-Registration and $25.00 fee required. Hospice volunteers are needed to assist our terminally ill patients and their families by providing emotional support, respite care, and grief support. Volunteers are also needed to assist with vital clerical duties in the office.
Living with Diabetes – Conference Rooms D&E – East Wing. October 24 & 26 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. - Pre-Registration required. $20 per family per series or $6 per class. Class 1: Diagnosis, Principles of Nutrition, Eating out and Eating in, Treatment, Medications, Healthy Habits
Class 2: Acute and Chronic Complications, Glucose Monitoring and Considerations During Illness

Individual Grief Support, call Hospice of Emanuel at (209) 664-2550.
