New Program at Emanuel Medical Center Provides Extra Layer of Care for Moms, Newborns

Emanuel Medical Center is proud to announce it has launched its new OB Hospitalist program.
OB Hospitalists are board certified OB/GYNs who provide in-house coverage 24/7, 365 days a year. They evaluate women with obstetric and gynecologic medical issues and consult with the patient’s primary physician or OB/GYN, until her own physician arrives at the hospital.
“This program does not take the patient from her own OB/GYN physician,” said Alissa Erogbogbo, M.D., Medical Director of Operations for the OB Hospitalist Group and interim site director at Emanuel Medical Center. “It ensures that every patient, regardless of time of day or physician association, is seen by an OB/GYN right away if she needs urgent care.”
OB Hospitalists are required to have additional training in neonatal resuscitation, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and OB emergency care. Types of urgent care cases the hospitalists might see include patients 16 weeks pregnant or greater who require emergency care, ectopic pregnancies, miscarriages, and tubo-ovarian abscesses. Because OB hospitalists are always onsite, they can provide immediate surgery or manage problems until the patient’s OB/GYN arrives.
Establishing this OB Hospitalist program will also expand the number of OB/GYNs who can receive privileges at Emanuel Medical Center.
In collaboration with its new OB Hospitalist program, Emanuel has also unveiled a new photo wall in the Mary Stuart Rogers Birthing Center. It features “Welcome to the World Little One” and “Family First Photo,” along with colorful hot air balloons. The goal is to provide a special place for families to take a photo after the birth of their baby.
“We love being a part of the birthing process with local families and watching them celebrate together,” said Lani Dickinson, CEO of Emanuel Medical Center. “This new wall is such a great way for them to document their experience at Emanuel and create a lasting memory at the birthplace of their baby.”
The Emanuel team would love to see these first photos and is encouraging parents to use the hashtag #EmanuelMedicalCenter when they share their photos on social media.
Emanuel’s birthing center features a home-like atmosphere, provides private labor and deliver suites with high-tech birthing beds and an onsite Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for babies born prematurely or with complications.
