October Puts Spotlight on Breast Health
Turlock, Calif. – The Emanuel Cancer Center is committed to the fight against breast cancer. One out of every eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. If detected early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent. Mammograms are the most effective form of early detection. Emanuel is making it easier than ever for women to get their routine screenings, including offering next day appointments.
For patients who have been putting off their medical needs due to fear of coming to a medical facility because of COVID-19, there is no need to delay care. Emanuel Cancer Center provides a very safe environment for every person who walks through our doors. It’s important that patients do not put off routine screenings, such as mammograms, as that can create problems down the road.
Emanuel is putting its breast health services in the spotlight in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Beyond this month, it’s important to keep breast health top of mind year round.
Shining Pink for October:
Patients and residents visiting the Emanuel Cancer Center or driving by during the evening hours will notice something very special. The entire building is shining pink for the month of October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The hope is that this will serve as a reminder for women to schedule their routine mammogram and put their health first.
Monday Mammos:
Annual mammograms are an important part of a woman’s wellness routine, generally beginning at age 40. The Ruby E. Bergman Women’s Diagnostic Center at the Emanuel Cancer Center is staying open late every Monday in October until 7 p.m. to accommodate busy working women. Sometimes there just aren’t enough hours in the day for those with busy schedules. We understand it may be difficult for working moms and busy women to get in for their screenings during normal business hours. But the last thing that should be neglected is their health. These extended hours allow women to conveniently come in after hours, when they are finished with work or activities with kids and families. Call (833) 237-8973 to schedule a mammogram appointment.
3D Mammography:
The Emanuel Cancer Center offers 3D mammography (breast tomosynthesis) for breast cancer screening. Breast cancer screening with tomosynthesis when combined with a conventional 2D mammography has a 40 percent higher invasive cancer detection rate than conventional 2D mammography alone.
The 3D mammography system is conveniently located at the Ruby E. Bergman Women’s Diagnostic Center inside the Emanuel Cancer Center’s beautiful, spa-like facility. Patients receive their mammogram at the diagnostic center, instead of the main hospital facility.
The 3D mammography system offers exceptionally sharp breast images, and an advanced design providing more patient comfort. The ground-breaking tomosynthesis platform is designed to deliver superior screening and diagnostic performance for all breast types. It produces a three-dimensional view of the breast tissue that helps radiologists identify and characterize individual breast structures without the confusion of overlapping tissue.
If your mammogram results indicate you need a breast biopsy, we offer core needle biopsy, fine needle aspiration biopsy, stereotactic biopsy, ultrasound-guided biopsy or vacuum-assisted core biopsy. Patients are cared for by nurturing staff and radiologists who treat each person with the care and compassion they deserve.
Free Wig Bank and Resource Room:
The American Cancer Society provides a complimentary wig to any woman experiencing cancer and hair loss. The Emanuel Cancer Center wig bank is currently open by appointment only. The bank also provides complimentary hats, scarves and lap blankets. The resource library has materials available on nearly every kind of cancer as well as materials relating to nutrition, coping with cancer, caregiver support, family concerns, inspiration and more. To book an appointment, please call (209) 664-2427.
